I recall on a talk show they asked him for a joke. He started with "A frog goes into a depository financial institution to apply for a loan..."
He constantly poked fun at the contrived nature of talk shows. Something many other comedians have continued. He tore up the format with absurdist stories and non-sequiturs.

This was one of the things that was so great well-nigh his Netflix bear witness. In the first episode with David spade he basically cuts David off and says they are taking a break. And then gets him to tell this story, and and so halfway through the story, says they are back, and tells David to tell the story again. It's so fucking great how jarring it is for his guests and they simply don't know what the fuck is going on.

I think it was a Conan ep where he poked fun at people calling him a metacomedy, just it kinda fit. He was a comedians comedian, he could make general audiences express mirth for certain, but he could brand other comedians laugh harder.

Something I loved nigh him was that insane confidence he had. Where other people were undoubtedly freaked out about doing a perfect five minutes on a late dark appearance, he would show up with these shaggy domestic dog jokes and every intention of going over time. It was this quiet kind of iconoclasm, dude knew his shit was funny and he knew it was funnier when he could push a format to its absolute breaking point. He'd merely be daring these hosts to cut his fleck off considering he knew that they knew that they couldn't exercise information technology.

Less than ii years after Norm Macdonald was fired from Sat Night Live, he was asked back to host. In his opening monologue he asked "How did I get from not being funny enough, to existence and then funny I'm hosting the damn bear witness? So it occured to me. I haven't gotten funnier - the evidence has gotten really bad."
I try not to get personal on reddit but I freaking loved this guy. And I'm incredibly lamentable he is non here anymore. Huge loss. He was an inspiration. R.I.P.

His original idea for his opening monologue was he'd do some jokes at the kickoff, then he'd accept the camera all the way through the oversupply, to the backstage like some monologues nosotros've seen. Then get all through the building, all the way outside. To a limo, that would then have him to Atlantic City merely and so he could gamble all night. Live on TV, effectively fucking the bear witness with no host as revenge for his firing. His friends talked him out of it because they said he would never get hired for work again if he did information technology.

I know information technology'south incredibly selfish, but knowing we will never get any new Norm really, does brand me sad on a personal level. He was by far my favorite person to just "sentry" in standup, interviews, just hanging out / everything / there is no ane like him before, and there volition never be someone over again.

Wasn't he effectively banned again later this appearance? I'm non certain but I feel similar I had heard that and it's such a Norm affair to happen to him lol
